The prevalence of oculer diseases in CATS and DOGS

Eye diseases are one of the most common problems in cats and dogs. Over the years, there has been an increase in eye disease problems. The aim of this study was to evaluate and reveal the characteristics such as animal type, breed, age, gender, diagnosis of eye diseases of cats and dogs referred to Afyon Kocatepe University Veterinary Health Application and Research Center between 2015-2020. The research material consisted of 3387 patients referred to Afyon Kocatepe University Veterinary Health Application and Research Center between the years 2015-2020, a total of 282 cases with eye problems in terms of breed, age, gender and diagnosis of cats and dogs. In dogs the rates of harder gland prolapse 30,8% (n=52), conjunctivitis 13,0% (n=22), keratitis 6,5% (n=11), epiphora 6,5% (n=11), entropion 6,5% (n=11) among 169 dogs were recorded. In cats, the rates of conjunctivitis 16,8% (n=19), corneal ulcer 10,6% (n=12), epiphora 8,8% (n=10), keratitis 8,8% (n=10) among 113 cats were detected. In our study, Harder gland prolapse in dogs was found to be statistically significantly higher than other eye pathologies. Conjunctivitis was more common in cats. The rate of crossbred dogs was 22,5% (38/169), whereas the rate of tekir cats was 42,5% (48/113) that than other breeds. It has been determined that the distribution of eye diseases in dogs by age was higher at 0-6 months compared to other ages, similar to in cats. (33,7% 57/169 in dogs, 34,5% 39/113 in cats). When comparing eye diseases in cats and dogs by gender, males were found to be more than females. As a result; ocular lesions were observed more commonly in early ages and in male and it was observed that the eye tissue is extremely sensitive to inflammation and trauma, regardless of the type of lesion. It was concluded that all kinds of cases should be intervened immediately. Keywords: Cat, dog, prevalence, eye, ocular, disease
