Dr. Nezahat ÖZCANAugust, 2005, 199 PagesThis master thesis is a study which has aimed, to get a better knowledge ofKemalettin Tuğcu who lived between the years 1902 and 1996 and who wrote over300 novels for children, to understand his works better and his importance, in ourchildren?s literature.The introduction of this thesis emphasizes the concepts such as child,literature, children?s literature and popular literature in the firs part, the life of theauthor and his literary charecter has been expressed in detail and his writing aimhave been mentioned. Different points of views about Kemalettin Tuğcu have beenstated and at the end of this part, his works have been listed in an alphabethical order.In the second part of the thesis, fifty novels of the author have been firstintroduced generally, then analyzed thematicly. In his novels Kemalettin Tuğcu,ivmostly studied themes such as love, helping each other, fair income, thriftiness andpatience.Main charecters are always children in Kemalettin Tuğcu?s novels.However, these children don?t behave like a child; they have the knowledge andexperience of adults. In the novels, godness always win and bad people are alwayspunished.The events of the novels, usually take place in stanbul. In some novels ofhim, place is a village which he imagined. In a couple of his novels, place is only anisolated island.Kemalettin Tuğcu, wrote his works in stanbul Turkish, avoided from longdescriptions and long sentences and preferred a simple narration.The fiction of his novels is strong. The relationship between people andevents are at a level which a child can understand. He reflected the place, where helived, and the charecteristic of the period, when he lived to his works. The novelsaddress to both children and early youth period and also can be read by adults.The frequency of melodrama charecteristic in Kemalettin Tuğcu?s novelsstems from his personality. Tehere is a close relationship between his life and hisworks.After the Language Revolation in 1928, in the years at the market it wasquite hard to find a book which adressed to children, Kemalettin Tuğcu, with hisnovels, responded the need of children for reading. Altough Kemalettin Tuğcu hadseveral generations get reading habit, he has been a neglected author.Key Words: Child, Literature, Children?s Literature, Popular Literature,Turkish Education.v
