Illustration in terms of the sustainability of the city image in urban memory: A practice for Adana

The aim of this study is to discuss how the sustainability of the urban image in the urban memory can be achieved through illustration, and in this direction, carrying out illustration applications for city of Adana. Cities are important places where individuals live together and continue their lives by sharing their common experiences. Every single and collective experience of an individual in these public spaces turns into a memory about city space in that individual's memory. The space, which begins to have an essence with collective experiences, thus acquires a place in memories and become a great memory called urban memory. Basically, the urban memory occurs the experiences and images about the city. These images are the images of many urban components from the urban spaces. The sum of these images, which provide a holistic image of the city, is called the city image. The elements that make up the image of the city consist of many elements in the urban space. Assuming that the basic element shaping the space is the buildings designed in the city; It is possible to count these elements as architectural elements, urban equipment elements, public transportation vehicles and visual communication elements. All these design elements that make up the space are not only forming the space of the city, but also creating the image of the city. However, it is not possible for these elements to keep their locations in the city all the time: Changes and transformations that will take place in the urban space affect not only the space, but also the image of the city, so the memory of the city may also change due to this situation. In this study, it is aimed to keeping sustainable the image of the city in the urban memory, based on the assumption that changes in the city may transform urban memory. In this direction, a theoretical discussion was carried out on related concepts, interviews were conducted to determine the buildings that are thought to be part of the city image in Adana city center, and 8 illustrations were made in line with the interview data.
