Examination of design, construction and usage processes of city hotels in terms of user satisfaction: Cases of Sultanahmet and Kadiköy

At first, hotel structures were built for activities of accommodation and food & beverage, nowadays they have turned into buildings with many side functions such as congress, meeting, exhibition, cocktail and celebration in addition to their basic functions. This transformation has diversified the profile of hotel users and increased the number of them. This kind of mixed use has positioned hotel buildings, which are answering all the needs of this multi-functionalism, to a more important level when compared to past. Hotels appealing to different user groups, have to be designed for answering the needs of all segments of people. In this context, this research examines the relation between the design of a hotel building and users satisfaction in 6 hotels chosen from Sultanahmet and Kadıköy regions in Istanbul. In this study, hotel managers, hotel personnel and hotel guests are accepted all as hotel users. At the second part of the thesis, the historical development process of hotels through the concept of accommodation and how the improvement of tourism effects the concept of hotel are handled. At the third part, stages to take into consideration at hotel buildings for design, application and usage processes are investigated. At the fourth part, general information is given about the hotels used for survey and the results of survey are analysed through three lines of questioning. Lines of questioning are sectioned to parts such as design, application and usage. In the context of answers given, preferences of users for spatial conditions of rooms, satisfaction levels about the desicions of design for areas with bed, wet areas, common use areas out of rooms and areas out of hotels and preferences of users for their needs of privacy are evaluated. At the last part of the thesis the decisions of design at the hotels used for survey are determined, which lead the relationship between different units of the hotels to go wrong or break down; design principles were tried to be improved over the obtained users expectations.
