Abstract (EN)
viDYNAMIC ANALYSIS AND SELF-TUNING PID CONTROL OF A BATCHPMMA REACTOR(M. Sc. Thesis)Ali Emre ÜNTÜRKGAZİ UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYJanuary 2007ABSTRACTA wide variety of specialty chemicals, pharmaceutical products, andcertain types of polymers are produced in the batch reactor. The batchmode of operations is preferred when the production volumes are low, when insulation is required for reasons of safety or sterility, and whenthe materials involved are hard to handle. The batch polymerization process is widely used in industries for itsavailability and flexibility in operations. The main objective in the batchpolymerization process is to obtain the desired polymer properties aswelll as to reduce the batch reaction time.Control of MMA polymerization batch reactor has intensivelyinvestigated. This study is constructed with theoretical andexperimental steps. In theoretical step, mass and energy balances weremade for batch polymerization reaction and were solved . A geneticalgoritm (GA) is used to optimize the self-tuning PID parameters.Parameters calculated by simulation study fixed the polimerizationreactor at optimum temperature. Metyl methacrylate(MMA), toluene andbenzoyl peroxide (BPO) were used as monomer, solvent and initiator, viirespectively. Controler performance to maintain the temperatureconstant in reactor is very satisfactory.Science Code : 912.1.084Key Words : PMMA, batch reactor, temperature control, geneticalgorithm, self-tuning PIDPage Number : 171Adviser : Prof. Dr. Sebahat ERDOĞAN
