Production of vulnerabilities and coping strategies from an intersectional perspective: Disaster experiences in Kumluca and Finike, Antalya

This qualitative case study aims to discover how the climate change-induced "natural disasters" have been experienced in Kumluca and Finike by applying the intersectionality perspective. The main data collection source includes face-to-face interviews conducted with a total of 68 people using five different semi-structured interview forms. The data were analyzed MAXQDA 22 using open, axial and selective coding. Findings demonstrate that the agricultural vulnerabilities, the climate change-induced vulnerabilities and the strategies adopted to deal with climate change-induced vulnerabilities have been shaped by the neo-liberal political economy policies that are initiated by the global capitalist crisis. Thus, it argues that finding the root cause of and an effective solution to various, multi-dimensional, complex and interrelated vulnerabilities experienced cannot be understood unless demonstrating their direct connections with macro and meso level economic and political factors, that is, the capitalist system crisis and the location of Turkey in the hierarchical capitalist World System. The most important intersection categories emerged in this research are employment status, land ownership, gender, ethnicity, locality and sectors. How property ownership, gender and ethnicity intersectionality differ based on various vulnerabilities and strategies has not been discovered due to structural social and cultural factors. Because in Kumluca and Finike, the landowners are predominantly local Turkish men. Turkish women who own land, Kurds who own land, or individuals from other ethnic groups do not live in Kumluca and Finike. Consequently, since the current cultural and social structures of Kumluca and Finike, predominantly a social class-based analysis has inevitably emerged in the vulnerability analysis.
