Abstract (EN)

Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) caused by metacestodes of Echinococcus granulosus is an endemic disease presenting general health problem in Turkey. The main clinical manifestation of CE is mass where it is localized. The symptoms are related to whether the pressure of this mass or its rupture, allergic reaction and infection. In this study, 91 patients with CE have been investigated according to their demographic features and also macroscopic and microscopic histopathological examinations. In intermediate host tissue, the diagnostic values of the necrosis and its relationship with serologic findings have been thoroughly discussed. The outcomes of this study could be summarized as follows: CE localized intraabdominally were seen with more multi-organ presentation, CE found in liver and intraabdominally caused bigger cyst formation, the statistically significant relationship with weak correlation were found between the longer symptomatic CE and the bigger cyst sizes, necrosis which was the most relevant histopathologic finding of this study was seen more often with fibrosis, eosinophilia and giant cells at the neighbored tissue than with mononuclear cells, neutrophilia and protoscolex, necrosis was observed in mostly at liver and kidney localization than the other organs, higher titration of IHA was with more often in the cases where their histopathologic examination was marked as necrosis and eosinophil positive. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study reporting necrosis as a histopathologic finding of CE. Further studies should be realized to reveal the pathologic mechanism and the clinical importance of the necrosis seen in the host tissue of the patients with CE. Key words: Cystic echinococcosis, Echinococcus granulosus, Histhopathology, Necrosis
