Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT PhD Thesis SLOW, FAST AND HYDROGEN PYROLYSIS OF RAPE SEED ÖZLEM ONAY Anadolu University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Chemical Engineering Program Supervisor: Prof.Dr. Ö.Mete KOÇKAR 2001,192 pages In this thesis, slow pyrolysis, fast pyrolysis, flash pyrolysis and hydrogen pyrolysis experiments have been conducted on a sample of rape (Brassica napus) seed. The experiments were performed in four different retort to investigate, particularly, the influence of pyrolysis temperature, heating rate, particle size, sweep gas velocity and hydrogen pressure on the pyrolysis product yields. In addition, the pyrolysis oil obtained at the different conditions were characterised by using spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. The maximum oil yields of 75% and 84% were obtained at the flash pyrolysis with pyrolsis temperature of 550-600°C, sweeping gas flow rate of 100 cm3min"1 and at hydrogen pyrolysis with pyrolysis temperature of 550°C, hydrogen pressure of 150 bar, respectively. The chemical characterisation has shown that the oil obtained from rape seed can be used as a renewable fuel and chemical feedstock. Keywords: Rape Seed, Pyrolysis, Biomass, Synthetic Fuels
