Using spatial information systems between instituons

VI ABSTRACT Last thirty years, spatial information systems which have been using gradually increasing number and capacity in the world. They have been using firstly in municipalities in our country in last decade. There have not been any completed studies yet, but in most of the studies in our country, especially inclination to municipal working fields. Geographic information systems (GIS) need great economical investments with hardware, software and data collection. GIS must set up and use to take maximum profit as in the all other investments to save limited country sources. The best economic solution is: There must be one GIS in a city and all governmental societies must use this instead of setting up theirs. So, setting up GIS in the city that called "urban information system" must plan, set and use multi-purposed. The characteristics, problems and solution methods of multi-purposed GIS, which set up in the cities, are aim of this study. Multi- purposed and complexity which are come from usage among institutions and precautions for this are discussed besides, suggestions are made by benefiting from results and experiments setting from sample application. As application field, the area which belongs to Izmir Konak Municipality where there are first digital topographic maps is chosen.
