Abstract (EN)
This study was conducted to determine the perceived stress and coping behaviours of individuals who will undergo coronary angiography for the first time. This descriptive study was conducted in Şanlıurfa Harran University Hospital between October 2021 and December 2022 with 200 patients who applied to the cardiology inpatient service between October 2021 and December 2022 and who were planned to undergo coronary angiography procedure that met the inclusion criteria. The data of the study were collected by face-to-face interview method using personal information form, perceived stress scale and coping styles with stress scale. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows 25 programme was used to evaluate the data. Descriptive statistics, percentage, mean, median, number and standard deviation were used in the analysis of the data. In cases where the data showed normal distribution, t test and ANOVA test and in cases where the data did not show normal distribution, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis and spearman correlation were analysed. The significance values of the data were accepted as p<0.05. The mean age of the patients who participated in the study was found to be 51.06±13.03 years. It was found that 53.5% of the patients were male, 37% were employed, 93% were married and 25% were illiterate. It was reported that 50.5% of the patients smoked, 86.5% did not exercise, 52.5% had chronic diseases, 64% did not receive information about angiography, 60% had a family member with heart disease, 75.5% had chest pain, 54% had shortness of breath. It was determined that 80.5% of the patients were anxious about coronary angiography and 70.5% of the patients would be relieved to receive information before the coronary angiography procedure. The mean total score of the perceived stress scale was found to be 34.73 ± 9.74. Significant differences were found between the mean scores of the sub-dimensions of the coping styles with stress scale and gender, educational level, employment status, presence of chronic disease, receiving information about angiography, anxiety about angiography, and being relieved by receiving information about angiography. It was determined that there was a negative relationship between the stress levels of the patients participating in the study and their coping behaviours with stress. It is recommended to determine the stress level and factors causing stress in patients who will undergo coronary angiography, and to conduct training programmes for the use of effective coping methods with stress, taking into account the socioeconomic status, spoken language and educational level of the patient.
