Abstract (EN)
Nowadays, the incidence of cardiovascular diseases and cancer is gradually increasing, and the importance of plants which have pharmacological properties used for treatment and prevention purposes in daily diet is increasing. Red cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.var. capitata f. rubra) from the Brassicaceae family is a vegetable rich in phytochemicals, especially phenolic compounds, flavonoids and anthocyanins. In our study, water and methanol extracts of red cabbage were obtained. The antimicrobial activities of these extracts were investigated against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aereus, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Yarrowia lipolytica, Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis by disk diffusion method. DNA protective activity was determined using pBR322 plasmid and UV-C. Cytotoxic activity was investigated in H1299 and HUVEC cell lines by MTT method. As a result of our study, it appeared that there is no antimicrobial activity of red cabbage extracts against the tested microorganisms. It was observed that the methanol extract had DNA protective activity, but the activity of the water extract was lower. On the other hand, red cabbage methanol and water extracts did not show cytotoxic activity on H1299 cells. By the end of our research with reviewing the previous literature, we concluded that red cabbage contains a number of biologically active compounds whose biological activity appears more effectively after being isolated from the plant.
