Determination of the relationship between nutritional status, anthropometric measurements with quality of life and sleep in chronic obstructive lung patients

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to determine the effects of nutritional status and anthropometric measurements on life and sleep quality of chronic obstructive pulmonary patients. A total of 80 individuals diagnosed with COPD, 64 (80.0%) men and 16 women (20.0%) aged 40-75 years, were included in the study. Participants' general features, health information, smoking status, nutritional habits, anthropometric measurements, food consumption records, biochemical parameters, quality of life (COPD Assessment Test-CAT, St. George Respiratory Questionnaire-SGRQ), activities of daily living (Lawton Brody IADLs), self-efficacy (COPD Self-Efficacy Scale), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index-PUKI), and physical activity (International Physical Activity Questionnaire-IPAQ) was evaluated. It was observed that 11.4% of individuals in stage 1-2 and 36.1% of individuals in stage 3-4 had a decrease in body weight in the last 6 months (p<0.05). However, no significant correlation was found between anthropometric measurements of individuals according to COPD stages (p>0.05). The median nighttime sleep duration of individuals with good sleep quality was 8.2 hours, and those with poor sleep quality were 7.9 hours (p<0.05). A positive significant correlation was found between muscle mass and COPD Self-Efficacy Scale score (p<0.05). A positive correlation was found between hand grip strength and energy intake (p<0.001). While there was a positive correlation between neck circumference and BMR and energy, carbohydrate (g) and protein (g), there was a negative correlation between fat (%) (p<0.05). As a result of the logistic regression analysis, it was found that when the SGRQ symptom score increased by 1 unit, poor sleep quality increased by 4.3% (OR=1.043, p<0.05). Decreased muscle strength of individuals with COPD reduces their quality of life. In order to increase the quality of life of individuals with COPD, their nutritional status should be evaluated regularly and individual nutrition therapy programs should be developed.
