2.ABSTRACTTHE ACUTE EFFECTS OF SINGLE AND COMBINED USE OF INHALEDFORMOTEROL AND TIOTROPIUM ON PULMONARY FUNCTIONS INCOPD PATIENTSChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is characterized as totally non-recovered airflow limitation, bronchodilators has been considerably engaged for thetreatment of it.In this study, the effect of combined or alone use of inhaler formoterol andtiotropium on respiratory functions in acute phase in patients with COPD was evaluatedand compared.Inhaler formoterol was given in the first study day, inhaler tiotropium capsulewas given in the second study day, inhaler formoterol and inhaler tiotropium capsulescombination was given in the third study day to 30 patients with COPD. One day offwas established between study days. Measurements were obtained prior to givenmedications and 15th 30th and 60th minutes, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th hours followingthe morning doses. Measurements were also obtained 15th 30th and 60th minutes, 2nd, 7th,10th, 11th, 12th hours following evening doses due to prevent sleep quality of patients. When combined therapy and formoterol were compared, FEV1 was noticedsignificantly increased in daylight 10th and 12th hours (p=0.013 and p=0.010,respectively) and in the evening 10th, 11th and 12th hours (p=0.004, p=0.026 andp=0.011, respectively). When tiotropium was discussed, in favor of combined therapywas only noticed in the evening 10th, 11th and 12th hours (p=0.012, p=0.043 andp=0.011, respectively). In conclusion; it can be said that either formoterol or tiotroprium can also effecton respiratory functions in short period of time in patients with moderate and advancedCOPD. Combination of these medications augments of these effect and continue 24hours.Key words: COPD, formoterol, tiotropium, pulmonary function tests
