Ill THE EVALUATION OF THE RURAL TRADITIONAL HOUSING PATTERN WITHIN THE CONTENT OF TOURISM, CUMALIKIZIK CASE (M.Sc. Thesis) Nilüfer GÜRER GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY June 2003 ABSTRACT For the sustainability of the national heritage, the conservation of the rural areas which reflects traditional life styles and cultural characteristics of the communities is important. When the conservation process of projects successful at international level is analyzed, it is seen that the economic support of a second sector, like tourism, is needed. As an alternative tourism, "rural tourism" is an effective sector for the sustainability of rural life and its structure. The conservation of rural areas is a rather new concept in Turkey. Therefore, the effectivity of rural tourism on the rural conservation is investigated in this thesis. For the case study, Bursa- Cumahkizik municipality, which preserved its traditional and historical values, is selected. This thesis work comprises the literature survey, the questionnaire and the field study applied together with the data analysis phases. With proper and applicable instrumentations, pre-set approach, and continuous training, the "rural tourism" is tried to be shown as an effective sector in conservation of rural housing patterns and conveying it to future generations.IV Science code : 12 Key Words : Conservation, sustainability, rural area, rural tourism, traditional rural settlements Page Number : 219 Adviser : Assoc.Prof.Dr. Zuhal ÖZCAN
