Abstract (EN)
"Depression is a common mental disorder, characterized by sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, tiredness, and poor concentration" and is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Coronary artery disease is "a plaque buildup in the wall of the arteries that supply blood to the heart" and "the plaque made up of cholesterol deposits." Not only death but also depression is associated with functional impairment and disability, suboptimal work in the workplace, and absenteeism, which may lead to unemployment. This thesis is a cross-sectional, quantitative, and descriptive study. We interviewed 405 patients from three governmental hospitals in Northwest Syria to examine the association between some socioeconomic and demographic variables and the PHQ-9 mental health score for those diagnosed with coronary artery disease. In order to examine the association, we employed multivariate linear regression analyses. Descriptive analysis shows that our sample comprises 260 males and 145 females. 332 participants are married. What is surprising about the findings in this research is that gender does not show a significant association with PHQ-9 score. Further analysis showed that smoking is not correlated with PHQ-9 score. The most striking result to emerge from the analysis is that engaging in sports is statistically significant and negatively correlated with the PHQ-9 score. It is worth noting that losing loved ones before or after the diagnosis of coronary artery disease is statistically significantly associated with the PHQ-9 score. Interestingly, a significant interaction between personal or job conflicts and the PHQ-9 score was also observed. Complying with medications for coronary artery disease, having diabetes or hypertension, and a BMI are not significant factors with a PHQ-9 score. Keywords: coronary artery disease, depression, PHQ-9, and mental disorders
