An investigation the development of remote work in the context of digitalization

This study examines the remote work literature shaped by digitalization between 2017 and 2024, independent of the pandemic context. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, it analyzes conceptual orientations, thematic clusters, and methodological trends. A total of 311 academic publications—both national and international—were evaluated through systematic literature review, bibliometric analysis, thematic content mapping, conceptual centrality modeling, and qualitative classification. Findings reveal that the literature predominantly concentrates on three thematic domains: "Human and Organizational Dynamics" (42.1%), "Digital Operations and Technological Structures" (36.0%), and "Public Transformation and Spatial Equity" (21.9%). Conceptual centrality analysis highlights high contextual relevance for terms such as flexibility, trust, virtual teams, and digital integration. An 82% thematic overlap between national and international studies indicates that digital transformation is shaped around globally shared concepts. However, limited use of AI-based tools, underrepresentation of vulnerable groups, and weak interdisciplinary transitions in national publications are identified as areas for improvement. Ultimately, the thematic intensity, conceptual centrality, and methodological diversity of the literature on remote work between 2017 and 2024 indicate that remote work has been shaped by globally shared concepts within the context of digitalization. At the national level, it presents development potential in areas such as disciplinary transition, technological innovation, and social inclusiveness. In addition to addressing gaps in the literature, this study aims to contribute both theoretically and practically to future-oriented digital work models.
