Kwl (What do i know? what do i want to learn? what is my learning?) strategy's impact on the achievement of comprehension of primary school third grade students

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of KWL strategy on reading comprehension achievement of 3rd grade primary school students. The study group included 37 students (19 students from the experimental group and 18 students from the control group) from 3rd grade students in the Akçalı Primary School in central district of Bartın province in the 2017-2018 academic year. Strategy of the KWL was implemented to the students who are in the experimental group. The students who are in the control group were assessed reading comprehension achievement based on the current program that is applied normally. The semi-experimental model with pre-test and post-test control group was conducted in the study. The research study took 6 weeks. Pre-test studies were done in the first week of this period. Also, post-test studies were done in the last week of this period. The practices of the KWL strategy on reading comprehension lasted 2 course hours in 2 sessions per week. In fact, a total practice of 24 hours (4 hours per week) was applied. "Reading Comprehension Achievement Test" was prepared in order to obtain data by the researcher. The data that were obtained, were entered into SPSS 22 package program. Shapiro-Wilk, Mann Whitney U test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Tests were used for the analysis of the data. The level of significance was accepted as 0.05. As a consequence of this study, it was determined that the students who in the experimental group, had better level of narrative and informative text reading comprehension than the control group before the study. Students who are in the experimental group, their level of narrative and informative text reading comprehension increases during the Turkish lessons based on the strategy of the KWL. However, Students who are in the control group, their level of narrative and informative text reading comprehension did not change during the Turkish lessons based on the strategy of the KWL. After the study, it was understood that students who are in the experimental group,their level of narrative and informative text reading comprehension is better than students who are in the control group. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the KWL Strategy has a positive effect on the reading comprehension success on narrative and informative texts of third grade students and this strategy is more effective in increasing the reading comprehension success in informative texts.
