Learning strategies of foreign language learners in an EFL classroom

Abstract (EN)

The main purpose of this study was to find out the foreign language learning strategies used by EFL learners. Furthermore, this study also aimed to discover the most and the least frequently used language learning strategies. A qualitative and a quantitative research methods were used to reach these aims above. The quantitative part of the study consists of an inventory which includes 50 items in total. And, the qualitative part involves a semi-structured interview, which has 6 open-ended questions. This study was conducted at Toros University in Mersin and 50 students participated in this research. The findings showed that foreign language learners use Memory, Metacognitive, Cognitive, Compensation, Affective and Social strategies while learning a foreign language. Moreover, it was also found that the most frequently used language learning strategies are Metacognitive and Compensation strategies. On the other hand, the least frequently used foreign language learning strategies are Cognitive and Social strategies.
