Abstract (EN)
Evaluation of cervical cytology changes with respect to levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterin system and the copper intrauterine device utilisation timeObjective: The aim of this study is to determine the changes in cervical cytology with respect to copper intrauterine device and levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system utilisation time.Material and Methods: This study included 60 women who attended to Düzce University School of Medicine gynecology outpatient clinic between September 2011 ? March 2012. The study group 1 and group 2 each consisted of 20 women with single partner who were using copper intrauterine device and levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system respectively for contraception or dysfunctional uterine bleeding in study group. The group 3 (control group) consisted of 20 women with single partner who were not using of any intrauterine device without a history of sexual transmitted disease. Cervical cytology results of study and control groups were compared. Results: In copper intrauterine device users, the detection rates of Class 1, Class 2, ASC-US (Atipical squamous cells of undetermined significance), LGSIL (Low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion), HGSIL (High grade squamous intraepithelial lesion) were 30 %, 60 %, 5 %, 0 % and 0 % respectively. In levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system users, the detection rates of Class 1, Class 2, ASC-US, LGSIL, HGSIL were 60%, 30 %, 0 %, 10 % and 0 % respectively. When compared with control group, there was no statistically significant difference in cytology results in either group (p = 0.10).Conclusion: Copper intrauterine device or levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system use does not seem to affect the cervical cytology results. However, determining the relationship between the possible cervical cytology changes with copper intrauterine device or levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system use should be evaluated with lager series. Cervical cytology smears must be taken before and after with one year interval and colposcopic evaluation should be done in case of abnormal cervical cytology results in women who use copper intrauterine device and levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system.Key Words: Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system, Copper intrauterine device, Cervical cytology
