The relationship between high school students' cyber victimization, their coping skills with cyber-bullying, and resilience

In this study, it was aimed to examine the relationship between high school students' cyber victimization, coping skills with cyberbullying, and psychological resilience. In the study, the relationship between the coping skills with cyberbullying and psychological resilience with the age of the adolescents, gender, parental education level, parental relationship status and income level, and the effects of phone, tablet, virtual game and computer use on cyber victimization were examined. The study consists of a total of 440 students, 267 (60.7%) girls and 173 (39.3%) boys, ranging from 14 to 18 (mean = 15.82 ± 1.25). The data collection tools used in the research are Cyber Victimization Scale, Cyber Bullying Coping Scale, Child and Adolescent Psychological Resilience Scale. The data were evaluated with t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and Mann-Whitney U analysis. The data were analyzed using SPSS Version 25.0. Our research shows that students who use computers for more than two hours a day have significantly higher cyber victimization mean than other students (p < .01). It appeared that the levels of cyber victimization and coping skills with cyberbullying did not differ according to gender. It was concluded that the level of psychological resilience did not differ with parental relationship status, education level of parents, gender; but differed with income level. In addition, it was concluded that coping skills with cyberbullying and resilience were related and that resilience was a positive predictor of coping skills (p= .001).
