Abstract (EN)

Objective: The purpose of the study is to assess the validity and reliability of M.D. Anderson Symptom Inventory-Brain Tumor (MDASI-BT) for the society of Turkish.Method: This is a methodological study. The study involved 144 patients under treatment with the diagnosis of primer brain tumor at two hospitals of the university from January to June in 2009. The sample size was measured through multiplying the number of items by five. In this study, we had confirmation of Ethics Committee, and written permissions from the owner of the inventory, from institutions and patients as well. The data had been collected with ?Patient Data Collection Form?, ?M.D. Anderson Symptom Inventory-Brain Tumor? and ?Karnofsky Performance Scale?. M.D Anderson Symptom Inventory-Brain Tumor developed by Armstrong et al. (2006) is composed of two parts as symptom and interference. Inventory includes 28 items and seven sub-dimensions, and the scores of items range from 0 to 10.Results: In the language validity of the inventory, translation back-translation was made and in the content validity of the inventory, it was determined that the opinions of the experts were consistent (KW=.172, p=.09). Internal consistency reliability coefficient of the Turkish form of M.D. Anderson Brain Tumor Symptom Inventory (MDA-BTSETr) is 90, and correlation coefficients of total item scores range from .21 to .69. As a result of confirmatory factor analysis, the model consistency indexes of symptom inventory part are ? 2(193,N=144) = 370.15; RMSEA=.075; GFI=.82; CFI= .91 and NNFI= .89; while the indexes in interference inventory part are ? 2(7,N=144)= 13.80; RMSEA=.075; GFI=.97; CFI=.98 and NNFI=.96. It was also confirmed that this had a similar model structure with the original inventory model. According to the Karnofsky Performance Scale, it was determined that there was a difference between the patients divided into two groups showing good performance (90 and over 90) and the ones showing bad performance (80 and under 80) in terms of the severity of symptom and interference. Consequently, it was observed that the inventory was a distinguishing one.Conclusion: It was concluded that the MDA-BTSETr is valid and reliable and also is very high to distinguish in the patient with primer brain tumor. This inventory is suggested to use in evaluation of symptoms of patients with primer brain tumor.Keywords: Brain Tumor, Symptom Inventory, Validity, Reliability, MDASI-BT, MDA-BTSETr.
