Abstract (EN)

In present study, ethanol, methanol, extracts of Apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) fruits grown in Malatya were investigated. These extracts were studied for antioxidant capacity and examined for its DNA damage protecting activity. The antioxidant capacity of these extracts were evaluated using different antioxidant tests, including reducing power, free radical scavenging, DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS radical scavenging, Deoxyribose assay and ß-Carotene bleaching assay. The content of total phenolic compounds in the methanol and ethanol, extracts of Apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) fruits were determined using Folin-Ciocalteus reagent and compared with standart antioxidants Trolox and ?-tocopherol. Metanol and ethanol extracts of kabaaşı and şekerpare apricot fruits showed a concentration-dependent free radical scavenging capacity and protective effect on DNA cleavage. Ethanol and methanol extracts of apricot fruits. at 0,5-2,5 mg/mL exhibited significant protecting activity against DNA strand scission by OH? on pBluescript M13+ plazmid DNA (11,16 - 27,94%). Total phenolic compounds in the metanol and ethanol extracts of kabaaşı and şekerpare apricot fruits were determined as gallic acid equivalent (meq/100 g apricot fruits) 13.78 ; 22.20 and 14.5; 10.66 respectively.
