Bowl finds from Mardin Castle 2014 Excavation

The aim of this study is to examine the pipe finds which found in the Mardin Castle Excavation, which was carried out by Mardin Museum Directorate in 2014. In addition, the aim of this study is to introduce the pipe finds and to contribute them to the literature. Pipe, designed for the use of tobacco and similar substances; made of terracotta, is in the unglazed ceramic group. The pipe is used wtih the help of a stick and a mouthpiece.The pipe, which had an important place in the society of the Ottoman Empire for a period had become a part of daily life. In this way, its production increased to meet public consumption and simpler pipes than the tophane pipes were produced. However, due to the development of technology and the simplification of tobacco use, the production of pipes stopped over time. 70 of the pipes finds found in 2014 were selected and examined. The ornamentation and type characteristics of these nozzles were examined. The main material of all the pipe samples examined in this study is clay. The pipes were examined by dividing them into two groups: according to their bowl and base shape. The types of the pipes identified include pipes with cylindrical bowls, pipes with bag-shaped bowls, pipes with carinated bowls, pipes with round bowls, pipes with flattened round bowls, pipes with crater-shaped bowls and pipes with tulip bowls. According to the form of the base, only examples were found in the disk base pipe group. In the group of pipes whose shape cannot be determined, they were evaluated under three headings: pipes that are largely absent, pipes with bowl parts present, and pipes with smoke path parts present. The geometric and floral decorations of these pipes are explained in detail, supported by drawings and photographs. It is important that we understand the examples of the pipe, which had a place in the daily life of the Ottoman Empire, in Mardin Castle. The 70 pipes in the study date between the 17th and late 19th centuries.
