Abstract (EN)

This study presents the ethical views offered by Maturidi, known as one of the greatest Turkish religious scholars of all time, a scholar made a greater effort to establish a rational approach in ethical thinking of Islam by more likely emphasizing the role of reason on it, opposed to the fact known that it were Mu?tezila?s scholars who really considered reason important in Islamic thought. According to Maturidi, human being has an sense of values of ?good? and ?bad? which provide to evaluate on ethical attitudes and actions. Reason, human nature, and revelation have important roles on the formation of this evaluative power inclined to ethical education. The first truth which the emotion acting appropriate for its position would comprehend with that person?s own presence in total universe is the knowledge related to the ?hikmah?. The hikmah, which means ?to put everything into its proper place?, is the principal concept of Maturidi?s ethical understanding. The ?safah?, which is the opposite of that concept, is ?to put something into another place instead of its proper one?. There is a positive ethical relation between ?good?, ?reason?, and ?hikmah?, while there is a negative ethical relation between ?bad?, ?nafs?, and ?safah?. Besides, Maturidi studies on the subjects of individual?s wish and desire, of the thought of acquiring God?s consent, and of thinking about the outcome of the action as factors influencing to fulfill the ethical act. According to him, ethical individual has freedom to choose and realize his/her actions with contribution of those factors. The ethical obligation necessitates this freedom. Maturidi mentioned the elements which obstruct realization of action and showed the ways of protection against them. Then he brought up both rational and religious sides of his ethical understanding by advising man to educate his own nafs due to ethical perfection, and to ask for God to help him in this respect. According to Maturidi, human being has one single goal to accomplish in this world: the happiness of both this-life and afterlife. This goal needs not to undervalue with any ethical poverty like the love of this world, sadness, parsimony, and arrogance.
