The evolution of space: Transitioning from physical space to digital space

The adaptability of the concept of space has led to its evolution over time. The advancements provided by contemporary conditions are manifested in spatial experience inside architecture. Currently, the realm provided by digital technologies has facilitated the formation of diverse and novel experiences. The experience of space encompasses social, cultural, and technical dimensions. This thesis analyzes the evolution of space, particularly regarding digitization, and underscores the necessity for nuanced spatial interpretations to effectively understand both physical and digital environments. Digitalization has engendered novel spatial experiences that contest conventional perceptions of space. Conventional spatial analyses may adequately address physical environments, although they fall short in the context of digital realms. Museums, as cultural institutions, offer an optimal venue for examining spatial shifts. This thesis presents spatial reading indices for both physical and digital environments using content analysis,utilizing the Eskişehir Odunpazarı Modern Museum as a case study. The thesis significantly enhances the literature by examining the interplay between physical and digital places and presenting an innovative framework for their analysis. The study seeks to enhance academic comprehension of spatial change by integrating theoretical frameworks with indicators. This study examines the experience of physical and digital space through field research at the Odunpazarı Modern Museum (OMM) in Eskişehir, revealing that digitalization has transformed spatial experience, whereby space acquires not only concrete significance but also actively derives meaning in cognition. The correlations highlight the influence of physical and digital spaces on one another and their distinct characteristics, underscoring the need for varied assessment methods for each type of space.
