Abstract (EN)
The purpose of this thesis is to study the ?Performance - Based Design? concept andNonlinear Static Analysis procedures which are the most popular subjects of structuralengineering by using the analysis results of two different buildings. First, detailed informationis given about Pushover Analysis, Capacity Spectrum Method and Displacement CoefficientsMethod. An old, representative four storey R/C building with common features anddeficiencies which had been designed according to the old codes and retrofited recently, hasbeen selected for a detailed performance assessment and evaluation by using DisplacementCoefficients Method for both existing and retrofited situations. Furthermore, the performanceof a new R/C building that had been designed according to the existing code has beenevaluated.Analysis has been made to find out the strength and ductility of the selected typical buildings, which specifies the performance levels. The elastic base shear ratios obtained from existingTurkish code (ABYYHY 97), has been compared with the results of pushover analysis andover-strength ratios has been pointed. The results of Nonlinear Static Analysis have beenevaluated according to the performance criteria of the both new Turkish code (ABYYHY2005, Draft) that includes the ?Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings? subject, andFEMA. ABYYHY 2005 that has more specific damage limits for performance levels hasgiven more detailed and clear information about damage levels and distribution. In the light ofperformed analysis, the possibility of replacing the old force - controlled design methods bythe new displacement-controlled design methods is underlined. Keywords: Existing Buildings, Performance Evaluations, Capacity Spectrum Method,Displacement Coefficients Method, Nonlinear Analysis, Pushover Analysis
