Determination of fire risks and evaluation of active fire safety measures in school pensions of The Ministry of Education

Fire is one of the most important dangers that threaten the life and property safety of students in boardinghouses built to meet the need for student accommodation. It is necessary to take fire safety precautions in order to eliminate the factors that may cause the fire and to reduce the loss of life and property during the fire. In this study, it has been aimed to determine the fire risks and to evaluate the active fire safety measures in the school boardinghouses affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in the province of Ağrı. The study has been carried out with the descriptive research method. The study has been carried out in 16 boardinghouses affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in the province of Ağrı. The data have been gathered using the researcher's checklists and risk assessment forms generated using the 5*5 L type risk assessment approach, which were based on an examination of relevant technical literature and regulations. As a result of this study, fire risks have been determined in the boardinghouses, which were examined in general, at the level of significant and moderate risk. It has been observed that these risks mostly arise as a result of hazards caused by electricity, fire warning systems, beds, flooring and routing signs. In addition, it has been concluded that there are fire cabinets and portable extinguishers, which are among the active security measures of the boardinghouses, but the fire warning systems are insufficient and the existing warning systems do not work. Based on the results, it is suggested that a management policy should be developed in order to provide fire and emergency management in the boardinghouses and audits should be carried out with continuous reviews.
