Effects of plastic-based material employed in furniture manufacturing on compression and tensile performances of various joint techniques

Abstract (EN)

This study aims to determining the effects of various corner joint techniques prepared from plastic-based material employed in furniture manufacturing on the diagonal compression and tensile performences. To that end, the corners prepared from plastic material through various joint techniques (dowel type, new wood glued; dowel type, polymarine glued; lathed, plain new wood glued; lathed (450), miter-joint, new wood glued; matched, new wood glued; Philips-head screwed 4x50 non-glued; Philips-head screwed 4x60 non-glued; Allen screwed-50; minifix; trapezoid joint) have been subjected to diagonal compression and tension tests. Consequently, the highest diagonal compression strength has been found in the dowel type, new wood glued joint (820 N), while the lowest level in the Philips-head screwed 4x60 joint (196 N). As for the diagonal tension, the highest strength level has been found in the dowel type, new wood glued joint (1662 N), while the lowest level in the minifix joint (343 N). Accordingly, the dowel type, new wood glued corner joint technique may be advantageous in the plastic-based board used in furniture manufacturing compared to the other corner joint techniques.
