Metalizing the empty time in the context of modernization: Semiotic analysis of ruka (Hand) film

In this study, the concept of modernization is defined and it is tried to be analyzed within the framework of concept modernization components and theories. The theoretical approaches to leisure are examined in terms of social, political, economic and ideological contents of the concept and the manipulative and commodifying effects of modernization on 'leisure' are tried to be revealed. In this context, the 1965 film Ruka (Hand) by Czechoslovak animating director Jiri Trnka was analyzed phenomenologically from a semiotic perspective. A literature review was conducted for the conceptual framework of the study, and semiotic analysis was shaped according to Roland Barthes' flat and semi-semantic elements. With industrial development and modernization, according to the findings of the individual human life by entering the router devices work / business is shaping the remaining free time outside. Modernization fills the leisure time, which should belong to the individual, with the contents that it produces in a way to serve the protection of the capital and the maintenance of the system rather than the development of the individual. In this context, Czech director Jiri Trinka's 'Ruka (Hand)' film; it is revealed that the individual's life, time, work and production are attempted to be dominated by modernization in a totalitarian manner and this situation is criticized.
