Mülteci, Göçmen ve Sığınmacıların Medyadaki Temsili: Kuzey Kıbrıs Haber Medyası Üzerine Bir İçerik Analizi

The migration began in 2011 due to the civil war in Syria. In this study, it focuses on the representation of Syrian refugees who are represented as “other” in the TRNC print media.The news media reproduces the social reality through ideology, representation and discourse. The aim of this study was to analyse the forms of representation and the hegemonic discourse in the news texts about Syrian refugees.The news articles in Kıbrıs Postası, Yeni Düzen, Gündem Kıbrıs, Havadis and Kıbrıs newspapers of 31 October 2017 - 31 October 2018 were analyzed. In the reports against the Syrian refugees, it was concluded that racist and discriminatory discoursesare used and there were tendencies to blame the refugees. The findings of the research revealed that the selected 143 news were represented by exclusionist and problematic discourses in representing Syrian refugees. In the news, racist, discriminatory and hate speech were used against Syrian refugees. Besides, it is seen that migrants and refugees are shown as threat for the society.
