Ill REGARDING SEVERAL VARIATIONS EXAMINING LEVELS OF SELF - CONCEPT OF THE STUDENTS BOTH GETTING OR NOT GETTING MUSIC EDUCATION (Ph.D. Thesis) Dolunay AKGÜL BARIŞ GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY June 2002 ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to study levels of the self - concept of the students getting or not getting music education according to several variations such as sex, social and economic status of the family, education of the parents, participating in music activities out of the school, pleace of in habitance and also to find out the effect of these differentations on the levels of the self - concept of both groups of students. Totally 117 high school last year students were sampled for this research; 57 of which were music students attending Ankara, Bolu and Antalya High School of Fine Arts and also other 60 students, not getting music education, were attending Ankara Ömer Seyfettin High School, Antalya Karatay High School and Bolu Atatürk High School. "Individual Information Forms" were prepared and used to gather the data regarding to determined variations of the students chosen for this research and then to find out the levels of the self - concept of the students "self - concept Inventory High School Forms" were applied by the searcher personally. untilIV At analysing step "Two and One Way Classification Analysis of Variance" was used to discover the impact of the variations on the levels of self - concept of the highschool students getting or not getting music education. As a conclusion; when two groups of students getting or not getting music education were compared, it was found out that getting music education had the self - concept scores improved siginificantly, (p<0,05). On the other hand, While the variations such as sex, social - economic status of family education of parents family's relation to music didn't cause any difference on the self - concept scores of the two groups of students (p>0,05). the variations such as whether participating or not participating in music activities out of school and inhabitance place increased the self - concept scores of the two groups of students importantly, (p<0,05). As a result, some suggestions were presented to parents, educators and new researches about this topic.
