The problems of transformation of musical structures into the graphical language, and the album cover designs of musical genres

It is a well known fact that, after the mankind began to use his voice as a way of communication, the necessity of expressing the sound by symbols have emerged. The Egyptian hieroglyphs could be considered as the examples of sounds converted into symbols. Visual projection of music and related objects have always been discussed by numerous designers, in graphical design field. Some gaps and problems are observed when a field research is made in the case of the transformation of music into the symbols, in context of graphical design. When graphical designs that are related to musical events or album covers are analysed, it is obvious that some of these Works are incapable of expressing the musical structures and transfering proper data about the content. It could be said that, during the process of transformation of music into visual elements, the album covers are prepared by the motive of design that is depending on a visual style, and a direct connection with the fundamental components of music such as tone and rhythm could not be established. In some designs, formational properties are inadequate in terms of projecting the structure and dynamics of music. Because of these reasons, a new way of perspective is needed to be brought for the transformation of musical expressions into graphical indications. Within the extent of this study, the main subject is, the issues of transformation of musical structures into graphical language. The main elements of music were related to the design principles, and the projection of the result onto the graphical language is discussed. The reflection of music into the artistic eras begining from the reannasaince to contemporary period is researched. The history of album covers are mentioned, an some album cover designs were made for the determined musical styles, after the researches. This study is prepared to increase the quality of the graphical design related to musical cases, and to form new styles of expression.
