Abstract (EN)

Interoception, an embodied emotion and cognition theory, refers to the tracking of bodily and mental states. Higher interoceptive awareness enhances emotion perception and affective intensity by relying on bodily signals. Closely related, self-referential processing integrates new perceptual input with prior knowledge through top-down and bottom-up mechanisms that align sensory information with internal models. Music, given its emotional and social nature, provides a highly embodied experience and can act as a proxy for a social agent, enabling listeners to infer intentions. When paired with interoception, music-evoked emotions offer a valuable framework for exploring individual differences in evaluative processes such as emotion processing. This study examined how interoception influences behavioral and neural responses during music-evoked emotions. Participants completed implicit and explicit interoception assessments, followed by music listening and emotion processing tasks. Behaviorally, emotion perception accuracy differed marginally across categories, without any effect of interoceptive awareness. In contrast, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) revealed trend-level and group-specific hemodynamic differences in prefrontal subregions, with several channels modulated by interoception. Overall, the findings suggest that interoceptive awareness slightly modulated neural engagement during emotional evaluation. Despite modest effects, the results point to a potential link with embodiment, emphasizing the roles of interoception and self-referential processing in music-evoked emotions.
