Abstract (EN)

Nakkas Osman was one of the most important painters of the 16th century Ottoman court ateliers. Today, a certain number of miniature paintings that are found in different kind of manuscripts are usually attributed to Nakkas Osman. However, documents about the production processes of these paintings do not exist. For this reason, it is not possible to give definite information or connection about whether these paintings were produced by Nakkas Osman. On the other hand, with the help historical documents, we know that there are many paintings (including portraits and feature paintings) produced by Nakkas Osman. These paintings are found in the manuscripts with the titles of: Kıyâfetü?l-insâniye fî semâ?ilü?losmaniye, 1579 (TSM. H. 1563), Sahnâme-i Selim Han, 1581 (TSM. H. 3595), Sûrnâme-i Hümâyûn, 1587 (TSM. H1344), Zübdetü?t-tevârîh, 1583 (TEM. T. 1973) and Hünernâme I. Volume, 1584 (TSM. H. 1523). In this thesis, the research was executed on the miniature paintings of Nakkas Osman, that are in certain manuscripts which are mentioned above. With a close look at the compositional order of the paintings, it is intended to investigate the graphic approach, concerning the organization of the objective medium throughout the paintings. In accordance with this view, the work was done on evaluating the layer, dimension, act and colour as hierarchical adjustments. The distribution and lining up of elements in the composition, which are subject to creating space and existing in that space, are examined with schematic drawings. The First Chapter deals with the life of Nakkas Osman and his works; in addition there is information about miniature painting referring to its definition and its themes. In the Second Chapter, a general evaluation is made on the compositional adjustments of Nakkas Osman?s paintings. And, the Third Chapter is the applied part of this thesis. In this aspect, there are the portraits of all the former and present Presidents of the Republic of Türkiye.
