Why geography? Why geography education?

When you pay attention to economical and political events, it can be seen more clearly that the importance of geography has risen in due course. It stands out that the countries which have noticed this significance place more emphasis on geography education compared to the past. The aim of this study is to show the advantages geography education could provide somebody with and to try to explain, giving examples from different countries, how these advantages could be used for the progress of our country when necessary. Here we have made use of document analysis method among qualitative data collection types. The universe of the research is composed of books and articles, we could get through to, relating to geography education. The samples of the research are composed of related Turkish books and essays, we could get through to. During the document analysis process relating the research, various course books, essays and geography papers have been exploited. In order to find the data, the internet and libraries have been made use of. The data collected as a result of the document collection is compared and turn into chart. Within the scope of the research, it has been divided into 6 categories. In the charts number 3 and 4, it is clear that the studies are little in the heading of the contribution to general education. In terms of mentioning the cimcumstances in the sources, 38,9 % rate can be seen under the heading of assessing the events in a holistic way and 33,3 % rate is available in the heading of understanding the world. However, no separate study under a different heading has been carried out in these subjects, which is a great lack. We are of opinion that conducting studies in this subject under separate headings will make up a vital deficiency in terms of understanding the significance of geography education. Whether we are a geographer or not, no matter which side you are; we must learn and have geography education. Because, if we aim to raise individuals sensitive about the world, we must make people gain a point of view in geography. Yet, it is obvious that geography education is not provided as necessary and thus, geography has not advanced in our country.
