Nedret Gürcan-his life, art and works

Nedret Gurcan was born in Dinar, Afyon on June 26, 1931. He started to interestin poetry in 1948, and his poems were continuously published in important journalssuch as Varlik, Yeditepe, Kaynak, Şairler Yaprağı, Mülkiye and Yücel. Yaşadıkça Aşk ishis first poetry book that was published by Kaynak publishing house at 1953 in Ankara.Following the first book he contributed to poetry with lots of books: Festival (1956)published by Şairler Yaprağı, İki Beyaz Çizgi (1963) and Bulut İndi (1972) by İstanbulYeditepe publishing house, Tutkun ve Kırgın (1996) by İstanbul Yaprak, Beş Çayı(1998) by İstanbul Broy publishing house.In 1952 Nedret Gurcan published eight issues of a journal called Kervan inİzmir with Tarık Dursun K. and Cengiz Tuncer. Afterwards, he published 36 issues ofpoetry journal Şairler Yaprağı (between 1954 and 1957). Most famous poets and writersof the country contributed to Şairler Yaprağı. At that time, with Kaynak, ŞairlerYaprağı was the only poetry journal of the country and it always gave opportunities tothe young poets in order to support change.Although Gurcan known as a love poet, social problems, city-dwellers andpeople from provinces, problems and the excitement of daily life are also the mainthemes of his poetry. Nedret Gurcan constructs bridges and connections betweenprovinces and city in his poems because he knows both of the life styles. Despite all thedifficulties he shows that poetry can also exists in provinces not only in cities. Hispoetry is a mirror of country life, and a symbol of the struggle of the people fromprovinces.In addition to all, Nedret Gurcan is not only a poet, but also a businessman,politician, writer and journalist.In 2000, Gurcan was awarded by the Dionysos Şiir Ödülü during the event EgeliÜç Şair in the 13th Salihli Şiir İkindileriIn 2003, Benim Sevgili Taşram was published by Dünya publishing house. InJanuary 2005 he will publish a book called Yaşanmış Taşra Öyküleri that contains thestories about the country life.
