Abstract (EN)

This thesis investigates the potential of compressed stabilized laterite bricks (CSLB) as a sustainable means to affordable housing in Nigeria. The study addresses the pressing housing challenges in the country by examining the properties, availability, and environmental benefits of CSLB compared to conventional building materials such as sandcrete hollow blocks (SHB). Through a combination of literature review, case studies, and occupancy comfort simulations, the research demonstrates the economic viability, environmental sustainability, and occupant comfort advantages of CSLB. Findings reveal a cost difference of up to 15% in favour of CSLB compared to SHB, highlighting its potential to deliver affordable housing solutions without compromising quality. Based on the occupancy comfort examinations through a series of simulations and data analyses, the study examines key comfort parameters including relative humidity, air temperature, radiant temperature, operative temperature, discomfort hours, and outside dry-bulb temperature. Findings reveal that SHB generally exhibits higher air, radiant, and operative temperatures compared to the CSLB, with temperatures ranging from 36.44°C to 45.80°C for SHB and 31.83°C to 39.72°C for CSLB. However, CSLB demonstrates lower relative humidity levels ranging from 22.15% to 65.62% compared to SHB, which range from 15.54% to 53.47%. The study in general concludes that CSLB represents a transformative solution to address housing challenges, offering a pathway to inclusive and robust communities in Nigeria.
