Muslim population in Turhal accident according to Population Registers (1831-1844)

The word population, which is the plural of the Arabic word nefs, is used to mean "soul, soul, life" and generally refers to people living in a place. Censuses have been carried out in order to determine the taxpayers and especially the military presence since the early periods of the Ottoman Empire. The counting procedures performed for this purpose differed according to the periods and preparation purposes. In the early days, records were made to see the tax potential in the country in connection with the grooming system and books were prepared as a result of these studies. When the grooming system lost its importance, population determination began to be made in the form of countless counts and the counts continued in this way throughout the 18th century. However, with the new developments in the 19th century, the nature of counting operations began to change. In the Ottoman Empire, population determination in the modern sense was intended for the first time in 1828-1829, but the census, which was interrupted due to the Ottoman-Russian war, could not be applied in all counties. However, this attempt is considered as the first Ottoman census in modern terms. As a matter of fact, a text was published during the 1828 census in order not to frighten the public due to the uneasiness experienced after the war. In this text, the government has asked the public to help registrars. As a result of this census, population records, which are of great importance in historical research, have been revealed. Because population records provide researchers with a lot of information about the economic and social structure of the period recorded. Many issues such as the administrative formation of the region, the names of the settlements, the names and nicknames of the people, the military status and physical characteristics are revealed through the notebooks. 8 Turhal District Muslim population registers with all the information present very valuable data of the region between 1831-1844. In our study, Turhal Muslim notebooks were transcribed and tried to be supported by tables in terms of interpretation and understanding. As a result, it was possible to make a healthier assessment of the population and social structure of the Turhal District between the specified dates.
