Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to compare and identify the risk factors related to obesity in Türkiye, based on statistical data, and to establish correlations in order to develop appropriate prevention strategies and measures. In this study, determinants of obesity were investigated using the 2019 Türkiye Health Survey data. During the statistical analysis phase of the study, frequency analysis, Chi-Square test, and logistic regression analyses were applied. In the initial phase, frequency analyses of demographic characteristics were presented for the participants. Percentage (%) and frequency (n) values for each group were displayed together in the frequency analyses. In the second phase, Fisher's Exact Test and Pearson Chi-Square tests were employed to examine the relationships between obesity and independent variables. In the third phase, logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the relationships between obesity and independent variables. Obesity is a type of disease characterized as a modern epidemic. While gender and environmental factors are more prominent, genetic factors can also be considered. The recovery process of other diseases associated with obesity also prolongs. Obesity imposes a significant burden on the Turkish economy. Gender, occupation, age, and other variables should be combined to clearly understand the source of obesity. According to the analysis results, factors that increase obesity include older age (between 35-54), low education level, divorced status, unbalanced diet, and low household income. Having a regular job and engaging in exercise emerged as factors that decrease obesity significantly. Additionally, women have a higher risk of obesity compared to me. The analysis results can be used to develop various policy recommendations for preventing obesity. Effective solutions to the obesity problem can be provided through public service announcements informing citizens about the effects of obesity and promoting healthy living, as well as through taxation systems and sanctions applied to health insurances. Most importantly, individuals should be encouraged to change their lifestyles and lead active and healthy lives through awareness-raising efforts.
