Analyzing the relationship between learning styles and specific field competencies of prospective teachers

The purpose of this study is to introduce the relation between academic major competencies and learning styles of senior students at Ahi Evran University Faculty of Education, and to identify whether or not, characteristics such as gender, the type of high school graduated from, the major field in high school, the present academic department, type of training, grade point average, the level of education of parents, socioeconomic status of the family and place of residence influence the relation between academic major competencies and learning styles. The universe of the research consists of 275 students attending Ahi Evran University, Faculty of Education in Kirsehir in 2014 - 2015 academic year. In the study, as the data collection tool, a personal information sheet developed by the researcher, the third edition of Kolb Learning Styles Inventory (LSI) developed by David A. Kolb, A2 level Performance Indicators survey pertaining to Teachers Competencies in Their Branches from the General Proficiencies of Teaching Profession published by the Ministry of National Education within the project "Support to Basic Education" was designed as a 5-point Likert scale and used. At the end of the study it was concluded that no distiguishable statistical difference between the academic major competencies and the learning styles of the senior students of Ahi Evran University, Faculty of Education could be observed. As for the learning styles, no distiguishable statistical difference could be observed between learning styles and factors such as gender, the type of high school graduated from, the major field in high school, the present academic department, type of training, grade point average, the education level of father. As for the academic major competencies, it was concluded that there were distiguishable differences depending on the students' gender, the type of high school graduated from, the major field in high school, the present academic department, type of learning, grade point average, the education level of the mother.
