The effect of learning trajectories based coding training on preschoolers' measurement skills

Abstract (EN)

The study was conducted to investigate the effects of learning trajectories and learning trajectories based coding activities on preschoolers' length, area, volume, and angle measurements skills. A quantitative approach and a quasi-experimental research design were used. The participants consisted of 47 children aged 55-71 months from a state kindergarten in Adiyaman province. The children were selected as experimental (experimental 1 [n=15], experimental 2 [n=17]) and control group by random assignment. The current preschool education curriculum was implemented in control, learning trajectories based coding activities were implemented in experimental 1, and learning trajectories based activities were implemented in experimental 2. Experimental activities were 16 sessions for each group. The Early Measurement Assessment (EMA) was used for data collection which was developed by the researcher. Pre, post, and follow-up tests were applied to measure children's measurement skills. The data was analyzed by Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM). Findings revealed that both experimental activities have a significant and permanent effect to improve children's length, area, volume, and angle measurement skills compared to control activities. There was no significant difference between experimental groups. The study extended the effects of learning trajectories and coding activities on preschool children's mathematical abilities.
