The investigation of the school managers' cultural capital competencies and the degree of cultural leadership roles which the school managers perform

The aim of the research is to determine the degree of school managers' cultural capital competencies and the degree of their carrying out cultural leadership roles and determine whether there is a significant relationship between the degree of school managers' cultural capital competencies and the degree of their carrying out cultural leadership roles. The research was designed according to mixed method. Data were obtained during 2016-2017 academic year from the school managers (N=586/quantitative; N=18/qualitative) working in public primary schools, middle schools and high schools in the central districts of Mersin Province. Qualitative and quantitative methods were employed in the study. Avcı (2015)'s "Cultural Capital Scale", Yıldırım (2001)'s "The Scale of School Managers' Cultural Leadership Roles" and a semi-structured interview form were used in data collection process. In data analysis; the non-parametric tests and qualitative content analysis methods were used. According to the research results; in Turkey, the school managers' cultural capital competency levels and the degree of their carrying out cultural leadership roles were "high". There was a significant difference in school managers' cultural capital competence levels and the degree of their carrying out cultural leadership roles according to the variables of gender, educational background, branch, mother's educational background, father's educational background, number of siblings, monthly family income, preschool education, the kind of settlement lived for a long time before higher education, age, school type, position, seniority and the number of family members who had higher education variables.
