Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to research the impact of literature circle on the vocabulary, speaking skills and reading attitude. It is seen that there is a need for research in the listed areas of Turkish teaching. The opportunities provided by the literature circle make it possible to conduct a research on these areas. The research was conducted with the convergent parallel pattern of the mixed method research. Taking into consideration the data collection possibilities of the conducted research, this research method was seen as more preferable. In the qualitative research dimension case study was used, and in the quantitative research dimension, a single group pre-test and post-test pattern was used. Data on vocabulary and speaking skills were collected in the qualitative dimension of the research, while the data on reading attitude were collected in the quantitative dimension. The study group of the research consists of 29 7th grade students studying at Kaymaz Araman Secondary School in Kandıra district of Kocaeli in the second term of the 2018-2019 academic year. The data were obtained through semi-structured open-ended vocabulary screening tests, semi-structured speaking skills assessment form, checklist and attitude towards reading scale. Data on vocabulary and speaking skills were analyzed using descriptive analysis, and data on reading attitude were analyzed with dependent and independent samples t-test, using SPSS. As a result of the research, it was seen that the literature circle contributed significantly to students' vocabulary acquisition. It was concluded that the students who regularly performed the role tasks had high vocabulary acquisition. It was observed that the literature circle contributed to the development of students' speaking skills, and the students with lower speaking success compared to other students in the group made significant progress at the end of the process. Regarding reading attitude, it can be said that the literature circle did not have a significant effect on the attitude to reading in the group. According to the obtained results, literature circle has simultaneous contribution to vocabulary enhancement and speaking skills.
