Abstract (EN)
The coexistence of ethnically diverse groups has presented specific problems throughout history, and various ways and methods have tried to manage this coexistence stably. It has been a priority for those who hold power to manage groups with differences without separating; however, it has sometimes been challenging to achieve successful results. In this study, consociationalism, considered the most moderate and humane way of managing conflicts, will be discussed based on the example of Northern Ireland, which is the scene of an ethnic conflict. First, the study will define and preconditions of the consociational theory. Secondly, why the conflict in Northern Ireland has become a problem, the reasons, the parties, and the extent of the problem will explain from the past to the present. Lastly, the compatibility of the consociational theory with the Northern Ireland example will be discussed with the supporters of the consociational theory and opposing views. The study's primary purpose is to examine whether the theory in question gives positive results in the Northern Ireland example and to explain the reasons for the result to be obtained. The consociational theory will be examined different perspectives, such as political practices, economic processes, human rights, social environment, and intergroup relations in Northern Ireland. In this context, alternative views and suggestions will present. Keywords: Northern Ireland, Consociationalism, Belfast Agreement, Unionists, Nationalists.
