Teachers' views on teaching the concepts of the "Step by step Turkey" unit of secondary school 5th grade Social Science lesson

This qualitive study carried out to determine the teachers' views on teaching the concepts of the " Step by Step Turkey" unit of Secondary School 5th Grade Social Science lesson. Casestudy model wasused at this research as a qualitive method. The universe of the study consisted of all social science teachers who work in secondary schools depending on Aydın provience, Efeler District National Education Directorate. The sample group of the study was choosen by the maximum variation sampling which is a kind of purposive sampling. Sample group consisted of 10 social science teachers who work at different schools in Efeler District and teach for the 5. grade students when the research was carrying out. The data was collected by the face to face interview method. Semi-structured interview form included the concepts of that unit was created as the data collection tool. 10 open- ended questions were asked to each teacher at the interviews. Preliminary interviews was applied before the main interviews. Most of the teachers reject the audio record at the preliminary interviews so the researher used an other method. To prevent the data loss, a secretary took notes during the interviews.These notes were compared to validate the reliability of the data, while the data was analyzing. According to the result of the main research problem, teachers give importance to the concept teaching for their lessons and use mostly traditional methods and tecniques among the concept teaching methods. Besides these, they of ten use concept maps more than the other concept teaching methods. In additon to these results, it was determined that some concepts at this unit are difficult to learn. It is concluded that some concept are difficult to learn because they are abstract, not appropriate to the students' ages, not to be used in their daily lives.
