The investigation of relationship between middle school students' attetion skills and comprehension skills: Sample of Kirsehir province

In this study, it was aimed to determine the relationship between middle school students' attention skills and comprehension skills. Relational survey model was used in the study. The population of the study consists of middle school students studying in middle schools in Kirsehir city center and districts, and the sample consists of 958 middle school students determined by stratified sampling method. The data of study were collected in the fall semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. Personal Information Form, Attention Deficit Self-Report Scale, Listening and Reading Comprehension Test were used as data collection tools. SPSS 24 and Lisrel 8.80 statistical programs were used to analyze the data.As a result of the research, it was seen that the attention deficit levels of middle school students were below average, while their listening and reading comprehension levels were above average. In addition, it was determined that there was an inverse relationship between attention deficit and comprehension skill achievement scores. When the results were analyzed according to the gender variable, it was found that female students had lower attention deficit scores, but higher listening and reading comprehension scores compared to male students. In addition, it was revealed that students living in districts had lower attention deficit scores and higher comprehension achievement scores compared to students living in provincial centers. It was observed that as the number of social media profiles and the time spent on social media and the time spent watching Youtube and TV increased, the attention deficit scores of the participant group increased and the comprehension achievement scores decreased. On the other hand, it was observed that the attention deficit scores of the participant group decreased with the increase in the time allocated to reading books, and the scores they received from the listening and reading comprehension achievement test increased. In parallel with this, it was revealed that if the students in the participant group had libraries at home, their attention deficit scores decreased and their scores on the comprehension achievement test increased. When the relationship between grade level, attention deficit and comprehension achievement scores was analyzed, it was found that thea ttention deficit scores of the students increased and comprehension achievement scores decreased as they moved from the fifth grade to the eighth grade. In addition, students' participation in extracurricular courses decreases their attention deficit scores and increases their comprehension achievement scores. In parallel with this result, it was observed that the attention deficit scores of those who had the ability to play any musical instrument decreased and their comprehension achievement scores increased. In addition, those who have a personal cellphone and those who see their parents using their cellphones frequently have increased attention deficit scores and decreased listening and reading comprehension achievement scores. In parallel to this, it was revealed that playing digital games also increased attention deficit and decreased comprehension achievement scores.
