The content of lessons in the presence of sultan of Ottomans: The case of Ahmed Asim Efendi the Gümülcineli

In the study, the presence of the Ottoman Sultans', which were officially conducted in the last two centuries of the Ottoman Empire, has been examined with the possibility of knowledge of tafsir science. There are known some studies on the subject in the field of history and literature. Recently, there are researches at the article level examing these courses in the field of Islamic sciences have also been started. In this thesis, the presence of the Ottoman sultans with the perspective of the science of history, rather than archice document examining, based on its content and with the inductive method instead, with the criterion of possibility of being a new source fot Tafsir genre have been analyzed. In this context, Ahmed Asim Efendi of Gumulcineli has been chosen as an example for the study, who worked in the the presence of the Ottoman Sultans' for thirty-three years as a "Mukarrir" for a total of forty-one years. Based on the manuscript that, we identified as belonging to the author and classified as "Ramadan Lessons", it has been conducted a research for his the presence of the Ottoman sultans documents. It has been intensively have examined these records with the hypothesis of possibility of tafsir/exegesis based on their nature. The study consists of three sections. In the introduction, the subject, importance, purpose, method, and sources of the research have been discussed. In the first section, the tradition of Huzur Lessons and its performance elements were examined. In the context of its historical course, a "Chronology of Huzur Lessons" has been created, which gives a thought it will make an important contribution to the literature. Asim Efendi's life, scientific personality and works are detailed. Asim Efendi's Tranquility Lessons are analyzed technically. In the second section, the content of Asim Efendi's Tranquility Lessons is examined. In the fourth and last chapter, the tafsir method of Asim Efendi's Tranquility Lessons has been examined in the context of its method, language, style, and sources. The author's method of tafsir in the Huzur Lessons; the direction of narration and wisdom, lexical analysis, rhetoric and literary explanations and current issues are studied under the sub-sections. In the context of language and style, the author's presentation method has been examined and its sources have been pointed out. Accordingly, we analyzed the state of Huzur Lessons and the emerging products in the tafsir/exegetical literature.
