Abstract (EN)

Osteoporosis is a more important global health problem because of increasing in the elderly population. Bone mineral density measurement is used in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. In recent years, research for biochemical markers that can be used in the diagnosis and follow-up of osteoporosis has been the subject of many studies. Preptin is a 34 amino acid peptide secreted from pancreatic beta cells together with insulin and amylin. It is the physiological amplifier of glucose-dependent insulin secretion. Osteoblastic effects have been demonstrated in in vivo and in vitro studies. We aimed to investigate the relationship between serum preptin levels and bone mineral density and bone formation markers in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis. 45 postmenopausal osteoporosis patients and 35 postmenopausal healthy women between the ages of 45-80 were included in our study. Patients with type 2 DM, secondary osteoporosis, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, kidney and liver disease, and malignancy were excluded from the study. Serum preptin level was found to be significantly lower in the osteoporosis patient group (p<0.001). There was a positive correlation between preptin level and B-ALP (bone specific alkaline phosphatase) and P1NP (procollagen type 1 N terminal propeptide) levels. There was a positive correlation between L1-L4, femoral neck and total hip BMD measurements and serum preptin levels. It was found that the increase in serum preptin levels decreased the probability of osteoporosis diagnosis (OR: 0.994, 95 % G.A.:0.990-0.999, p = 0.013). The cut-off value was 356.925 ng/L (sensitivity = 71.1 %, specificity = 85.7 %). It was found that body mass index and B-ALP levels significantly increased serum preptin levels. As a result, we think that serum preptin levels can be used as a new marker in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. KEYWORDS: postmenopausal osteoporosis, preptin, bone formation, B-ALP, P1NP
