Effect of teflon piston prosthesis diameter on hearing results in otodklerosis surgery: evaluation with otoacoustic emissions

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to evaluate hearing results after stapes surgery by 0.3 mm and 0.6 mm Teflon pistons prosthesis with otoacoustic emissions (OAE). Retrospective analysis studied 10 patients selected who underwent stapedotomy for otosclerosis with insertion of 0.3 mm (group A) Teflon piston prosthesis, 10 patients with 0.6 mm (group B) Teflon piston prosthesis and 10 patients with normal control group (group K) between 2002 and 2005 years. OAE measurements were performed. The results of transient evoked OAE (TEOAE), Distortion product OAE (DPOAE) and DPOAE input/output between groups were compared statistically The TEOAE amplitudes of group B was found better than group A as p<0.001 at 2000 and 3000 Hz and p<0.05 at 4000 and 5000 Hz. The DPOAE amplitudes of group B was found better than group A as p<0.05 at 3000 and 4000 Hz and p>0.05 at 1000, 2000 and 6000 Hz. The DPOAE input/output amplitudes of group B were found better than group A as p<0.05 at 2000 and 3000 Hz with 65dB, 60 dB and 45 dB and p>0.05 at 1000, 4000 and 6000 Hz. The hearing outcomes would be better as the diameter of Teflon piston prosthesis were wide at the late postoperative period. The increasing in the diameter of Teflon piston prosthesis would be also cause of increasing on cochlear emission responses.
