The effect of teaching mathematics through games on the achievement of 6th grade students in the lower learning area of ​​operations with fractions

The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of the game teaching method on the academic success of the students in the sub-learning field of operations with fractions in the 6th grade mathematics lesson and to reveal the students' views on the teaching process with games. In the research, a quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest control group was used. The application was carried out with 6th grade students studying at 75. Yıl Alime Paşa Secondary School located in Demirci district of Manisa province in the 2022-2023 academic year. The research was carried out with 15 students in the experimental group and 16 students in the control group. In the experimental group, the lessons were taught by the game teaching method, and in the control group, in accordance with the teaching method deemed appropriate by the current program. In the research, "Operations with Fractions Achievement Test" was applied to the experimental and control groups as a pre-test and post-test to determine student achievement. With this; Semi-structured interviews were conducted at the end of the teaching process in order to determine the opinions of the experimental group students about the teaching process with games. Quantitative data obtained from the achievement test in the research were analyzed with SPSS. In the analysis of the obtained data, dependent t-test and independent t-test were used. Qualitative data obtained from the interview form were analyzed by descriptive analysis method. As a result of the analyzes made; It was concluded that there was a significant difference in favor of the experimental group. It was seen that the students' opinions about the teaching process with games were positive. It has been concluded that the game teaching method is more effective in increasing the success and attracting the attention of the students than the teaching method that the current program deems appropriate.
